Influence of depressed-index outer ring on evanescent tunneling loss in tapered double-cladding fibers.

چکیده
A tapered fiber with a depressed-index outer ring is fabricated and dispersion engineered to generate a widely tunable (1250-1650 nm) fundamental-mode leakage loss with a high cutoff slope (-1.2 dB/nm) and a high attenuation for stop band (>50 dB) by modification of both waveguide and material dispersions. The higher cutoff slope is achieved with a larger cross angle between the two refractive index dispersion curves of the tapered fiber and surrounding optical liquids through the use of depressed-index outer ring structures in double-cladding fibers.

Analysis of optical properties of fundamental-mode in waveguide tapered fibers
An analysis of optical properties of fundamental-mode in waveguide tapered fibers is theoretically investigated and realized in this paper. The waveguide device is tapering an SMF-28 fiber to few tens of micrometers of diameter. For discussing the cladding size of waveguide structure affects the fundamental-mode cutoff (FMC) and the optical characteristics of the devices, to etch outer cladding...
متن کاملHighly Sensitive Refractive Index Sensor Based on Adiabatically Tapered Microfiber Long Period Gratings
We demonstrate a refractive index sensor based on a long period grating (LPG) inscribed in a special photosensitive microfiber with double-clad profile. The fiber is tapered gradually enough to ensure the adiabaticity of the fiber taper. In other words, the resulting insertion loss is sufficiently small. The boron and germanium co-doped inner cladding makes it suitable for inscribing gratings i...
متن کاملFiber-optic bend sensor based on a section of double-cladding fiber
A fiber-optic structure based on a section of a double-clad fiber with depressed inner cladding is investigated for bend sensing. The structure is formed by splicing a section of SM630 fiber between two standard fibers SMF-28. The operation principle relies on the sensitivity of cladding modes that are induced at a splice of fibers having different refractive index profiles. The transmission sp...
متن کاملDetermination of Refractive Index and Confinement Losses in Photonic Crystal Fibers Using FDFD Method: A Comparative Analysis
In this paper, we present a comparative numerical analysis to determine the refractive index of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) by using FDFD method and used the results to evaluate the confinement losses of PCFs by considering the effects of air-hole rings in the cladding. It is shown that by increasing the wavelength, the imaginary part of refraction index rises, resulting in increase of conf...
متن کاملEvanescent-wave photoacoustic spectroscopy with optical micro/nano fibers.
We demonstrate gas detection based on evanescent-wave photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy with tapered optical fibers. Evanescent-field instead of open-path absorption is exploited for PA generation, and a quartz tuning fork is used for PA detection. A tapered optical fiber with a diameter down to the wavelength scale demonstrates detection sensitivity similar to an open-path system but with the ad...
